Wayne Hancock
SWING TIME
Release date: August 19,
2003
Austin’s Wayne “The
Train” Hancock is the world’s FINEST
purveyor of an enticing
blend of honky tonk, western swing, blues,
Texas rockabilly and big
band we like to call juke joint swing. At a time when many
self-proclaimed musicologists and genre snobs want to bottle
America’s rich musical legacy, label it, and put it on a museum
shelf, Wayne and his band will have none of it. Matter of fact,
they aim to uncork the strong stuff and serve it up, night after
night in town after town -- to hell with the neighbors or getting a
good night’s rest! It’s SWING TIME!
The Train’s second album for
Bloodshot, SWING TIME was recorded live during a 2-night
stand at Austin’s Continental Club – fabled roadhouse
extraordinaire and stompin’ ground for music lovers of all flavors,
as well as for Wayne and his tick-tight band.
Produced by Lloyd Maines
(Wilco, Richard Buckner, Joe Ely), this album dusts off some nuggets
that have been long out of print and dresses them up in some fresh
finery, showcases some brand new stuff, and rolls out a few covers
done in a style that’s scuffed up dance floors from Portland, Maine
to Portland, Oregon. In the glare of the stage lights, Wayne and
the boys – Paul Skelton and Dave Biller (both jumpin
on lead guitar), Eddie Rivers (steel guitar), Rick Ramirez
(upright guitar), Dan Enriquez (bass) and Bob “Texaco”
Stafford (trombone) -- kick it out and rescue country’s heritage
from the clutches of the Nashville leviathan.
(Speaking of Nashville,
turns out that mega-treasure chest known as the Country Music Hall
of Fame spotlights Mr. Hancock. Footage from an earlier Continental
Club gig of Wayne’s is featured in “This Moment In Country,” a movie
shown regularly throughout the day at the Hall commemorating the
“new traditionalists” who are carrying the musical torch of their
heroes – in Wayne’s case, Hank Williams – into the future.)
Bloodshot is thrilled to be
able to offer this energetic performance – Wayne’s fourth
full-length cd and a hard-swinging set of rockabilly juke joint
music that complements his earlier recorded outings with its gen-u-wine
LIVEliness.
We think you’ll agree – the
goods on SWING TIME are more infectious than poison ivy, and twice
as hard to shake once you’re exposed to it.
"I always thought I would go back to punk rock
and do what I was doing before. But then I heard Wayne Hancock, this
kid whose writing and music sounded just like Hank Williams to me.
He opened my horizons up to this whole thing about taking it back to
what it’s supposed to be. He got me inspired about all this."
– Hank Williams III, from an LA Times interview
